Kalimath

About Kalimath

A holy site called Kalimath can be found in the Rudraprayag area beside the Saraswati River. One of India’s 108 Shakti Peeths, Kalimath is situated at an elevation of 1800 metres. Kalimath is surrounded by nature and offers a serene and heavenly setting. In Kalimath stands the Goddess Kali Temple.

Legend has it that Goddess Kali entered the earth here after killing the devil Raktbeej. Visitors and devotees worship a silver plate (Sri Yantra) that covers the location where Goddess Kali entered the earth. Around the silver plate, a temple to Kali Mata was erected. Except on the eighth day of Navratri, when Sri Yantra is removed from the temple and only the Chief Priest does Puja at midnight, the silver plate is never opened.

Another belief holds that the goddess Kali’s lower half is venerated in the Kalimath temple and her upper half in the Dhari Devi temple outside of Srinagar.

In close proximity to the Kalimath temple is a Lakshmi Mata temple known for its eternal fire. At the same location, Saint Kalidas and Vrati Baba also worshipped Goddess
