Chandrashila
History of Chandrashila Temple
Chandrashila literally means the “moon rock”. It is located at an altitude of about 4,000 metres above sea level. The Chandrashila peak offers a spectacular view of the Himalayas, especially the peaks of Nandadevi, Trisul, Kedar Peak, Bandarpunch and Chaukhamba. There are several legends associated with this place. According to one of the legends, this is the place where Lord Rama meditated after defeating the demon king Ravana. On this trek you can also visit the Tungnath Temple – the highest Lord Shiva temple. The trek is easy and very doable on your own. But it is not a real trekking experience as there is a cemented path to the Tungnath temple and a well paved path to the Chandrashila peak after that. If you are looking for a real trekking experience, you can explore the Dayara-Bugyal trek or the Kedarkantha trek. These 4-5 day treks are popular Himalayan trails where you can also learn the basics of trekking, such as how to pitch a tent, use a sleeping bag and even climb up and down snow.
History of the Chandrashila
According to mythology, it is believed that this is the same place where Lord Rama meditated after winning over Ravan. There is one more saying regarding this place that
“Chandra” who is the moon God penance here for some time and due to which this place got its name as Chandrashila which literally means the moon rock.
Chandrashila
There are 2-3 suggested itineraries for Chandrashila treks. The itineraries are suggested depending on the facilities and preferred stay. Kund Camp and Sari Village both serve as starting points for different routes. One must also be aware that the route isn’t in any particular order, so don’t get confused by the route on the map. If you aren’t good with maps, don’t worry. Either stick to the route suggested by your tour operator or other hikers, or pick the best route I can suggest. If you want to have a closer look at the trail and the nature views on both routes, I recommend the route from Sari to Chandrashila.
Quick facts:
- Maximum altitude: 12,083 ft
- Temperature range: Day: 8°C to 15°C; and Night: -5°C to 3°C
- Approx. trekking distance: 16 KM

Key notes
- Make sure you are physically fit as the place is at an altitude of 4000 metres.
- ATMs and petrol pumps are not available there. Make sure you arrange these from Ukhimath.
- Hire a guide in winter as the route is snow covered and there is a risk of getting lost.
Trekking itinerary:
-
Day 1
includes the drive to the starting point at Sari. The journey takes less than half a day and comfortable accommodation is arranged here for the night.
-
Day 2
you can start the hike to the Deoria Valley, which can be reached in about 40 minutes. Deoria valley is a popular camping spot, not only for adventurous trekkers but also for those seeking a peaceful holiday in Uttarakhand. I did not even notice how the day passed as I sat by the lake and watched the undisturbed reflection of the Chaukhamba mountains from here.
-
Day 3
From here, it takes longer to reach Chopta because of the increasing steepness and altitude. Through the uneven terrain of the pine forests, it takes about 8-10 hours to reach our destination. At the end of the third day, just the idea of seeing the snow-covered peak the next day made me anxious. I counted the hours and hoped that the day would start earlier so that I could pack my backpack and hike to the spectacle.
-
Day 4
Marks a 5-hour walk with a moderately gentle gradient. The duration of 5 hours is the usual time span for regular hikers, for beginners it may vary. At an altitude of 12000 feet, this is one of the most important points in Uttarakhand flag. And, trekking in Uttarakhand is incomplete without all the Tungnath is a popular destination for tourists and locals because of the Tungnath Temple. This tallest Shiva temple in the world is an extraordinary place for meditation. It exudes an energy that is second to none, and it is not the usual feeling of sitting cross-legged on a lush lawn. Instead, it's the cool breeze that often gets rough, but still carries a sense of serenity. It is simply refreshing to sit here on the rocks in the silence of the snowy mountains.
