The Tungnath temple is said to be over 1000 years old and has a rich history associated with it. According to Hindu mythology, the temple is believed to have been built by the Pandavas, the five brothers from the Indian epic Mahabharata, during their exile. The temple is also said to have been visited by the sage Vyasa and the Pandava prince Bhima, who was said to have worshipped Lord Shiva at the temple.
The temple is also believed to be one of the five sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, known as the Panch Kedar temples. According to legend, the Pandavas built these five temples as atonement for their sins after the great war in the Mahabharata. The other four temples in the Panch Kedar group are Kedarnath, Madhyamaheshwar, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar.
The temple has been rebuilt several times over the centuries and the present structure is said to have been built in the 19th century. The temple is an important pilgrimage site for Hindus and is visited by thousands of devotees every year during the Char Dham Yatra, which includes a visit to the four sacred shrines of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.
The temple remains open for the visitors only during the months of April to November.
